Monday is Memorial Day- the official day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day is not only a day to remember those who have died for our country, but also a good day to honor all those who have served.
As employers and prospective employers it's important to support our returning service members. With over 180,000 service men and women transitioning annually from military jobs to civilian life- veterans face unique challenges when re-entering the workforce. Currently the unemployment rate among veterans that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan is 15%. Employers can play a powerful role in integrating our veterans back into our workplaces.
Many employers realize the value of bringing veterans on board. Attributes honed in the military include dedication, leadership, teamwork, and a work ethic that is second to none. Additionally, many come out with leadership experience, education and skills that are sought after and valued by employers. Veterans are known to be creative thinkers, hard-workers, conscientious employees.
For these reasons, many civilian businesses are stepping up to help with the hiring of veterans. Microsoft has announced a new program called the "Elevate America Veterans Initiative." It will focus on providing veterans and their spouses the skills in technology, as well as the resources necessary to reenter the civilian workplace.
Microsoft is asking other companies to participate by making proposals for their participation. Through a competitive request for proposal (RFP) process, Microsoft will award cash, software and IT skills training curriculum to eligible veterans service organizations, work-force agencies, as well as other nonprofit organizations and their partners that are providing veterans and their spouses with the support they need to be successful in their transition to civilian careers. Support provided by these organizations may include technology skills training, job placement, career counseling and other support services such as childcare, transportation and housing.
The government is also looking at ways to help. Last month, President Obama signed an executive order creating two task forces. One will focus on improving government contracting opportunities for all small businesses. The second will focus exclusively on procurement for small businesses owned by veterans and those who were disabled during military service. The U.S. House has also passed several pieces of legislation to help veterans find employment. One would establish a pilot program to encourage the employment of veterans in energy-related positions.
The hope is that employers will take a close look at the returning veterans that have served our country and provide support by offering opportunities and employment!
