C Documents and Settings Matt My Documents My Pictures flu preventionLast year the H1N1 virus was predicted to be a “Flu  Pandemic” causing employers to worry that large numbers of sick employees would mean their businesses would not be able to operate efficiently or at all.  Thankfully the pandemic didn’t happen.

This years cold and flu season is settling in and after last years H1N1 scare many employers are taking a close look on how to prevent illness from spreading throughout the workplace. For small businesses even one sick employee can have a ripple effect and impact an entire office. Keeping employees healthy is key in maintaining productivity in the workplace.

The following steps are recommended to help prevent illness from spreading in offices:

  1. Educate Employees – Inform employees on the symptoms, transmission and how to prevent the spread of the flu.
  2.  Purchase Supplies – Have hand sanitizers, Kleenexes and cleaning products on hand for employees to use in the office.
  3. Encourage Employees to Stay Home- Encourage sick employees to stay home at least 24 hours after they no longer have symptoms to help prevent the spread of illness.
  4. Promote Vaccinations – The Center for Disease Control contends that the flu shot is the single most important step in preventing the flu. Encourage employees to get a flu shot. Consider hosting a clinic and/or inform employees where they can get the vaccine in their community.
  5. Flexible Work Arrangements - Offering telecommuting and flexible schedules can help prevent the spread of the flu by allowing employees to complete work without exposing themselves or others to the virus.
  6. Promote Good Hygiene - Remind employees of the importance of frequent hand washing and covering their mouths when they cough or sneeze. Encourage employees to regularly clean shared office equipment and computers.
  7. Promote Health Year Round - Consider implementing a health and wellness program promoting healthy lifestyles.

Incorporating all or some of these suggestions in the office can help lead to a happier, healthier workplace during the flu season.
