HR: New Year Resolutions for Small Businesses
It’s a new year- 2011! Typically, this is the time of year when people make resolutions both personally and in business in an effort to help improve their lives and/or their success in business.
Below are a few tips for the new year to help small business owners and managers to help create happier employees and increase their business success:
- Communication - Communicate important messages to employees frequently and in many ways. Ensure your messages are being received both verbally, through emails and written material. Effective communication drives action.
- Goal Setting - Create and set clear goals for employees and the company itself. Once goals are set, review goals periodically to keep them fresh in everyone’s mind and to increase motivation. Involve employees in the goals and business planning to drive employment engagement.
- Focus on Feedback – Give feedback to employees to help them improve and do great work. Focus on the future, not past performance. Give feedback, advice and counsel on what they can do next time.
- Team Building – Allow employees to offer suggestions and share ideas as a means of team building. Being a part of a team helps employees to be more dedicated to their managers and the company as a whole.
The above tips, when put into practice, may not immediately effect your P & L statement, but in the long run they can have a positive effect on your employees, company morale and overall business success.
